Provincial Working Group on Supporting Families Affected by Parental Mental Illness

This report provides some preliminary findings on the percentage of British Columbian adult mental health and addictions clients who have children. In the early part of 2006, mental health service providers were asked to review their caseloads and count the number of clients who had children. A copy of the survey form is included with this report. Service providers from three health regions (Fraser, Northern, and Interior) completed the survey. The data included clients from ACSS, ASTAT, ACM, Eating Disorders, Addictions and Concurrent Disorders programs. Seventy-nine service providers completed the survey. Sixty-two surveys included the total number of cases reviewed.

Building Resilient Families Action Research Initiative

The Building Resilient Families Project proposed to provide comprehensive support to families with significant parental mental health issues in the Nanaimo region. This was provided by offering psycho educational groups and support to the parents, youth, children and natural support people (ie: extended family members such as grandparents, neighbours & care-giving friends) of these families. An Action Research component was also an integral part of this project to increase community capacity and collaboration. more........
